Have you ever rented a movie without realizing that you'd seen in before? This happened to me with Woody Allen's Celebrities - which was made worse by the fact that I was pretty far into it before I realized it. And I like Woody Allen.
Anyway, I've had this Russian vampire film in my Netflix queue for several weeks - ever since I read about in on the Monsterfest Blog. Night Watch is supposed to have fantastic subtitles that change colors and melt away and this was the main reason I'd queued the movie. But - after letting it sit on my tv stand for two weeks - we finally got around to watching it yesterday and found that it was the international release which is dubbed in English and has no cool melty subtitles. It's dubbed, though, by Russian actors and, since a lot of the dialog was muttered or spoken softly, we had to turn on the subtitles anyway. The plain, old, boring, white subtitles.
The opening scene sets up the story between the Dark and the Light Others with an epic, gory battle (are there battles in writing that aren't epic) that takes place centuries ago. As I watched it I thought it seemed a bit familiar - especially the tears of blood cried by Gesser, the leader of the Light Others. Then we flash forward to 1992 with Anton standing outside of the (freaky) witch's apartment and, "I've seen this before!"
I'd watched it with a guy I met on Yahoo Personals...a guy who I saw every day for a long weekend and then ditched because a.) he was clingy, b.) we had nothing in common and c.) he insulted Carson McCullers (don't eff with Carson, man). Obviously the movie hadn't made an impression on me at all (I was going to say like the guy [his name escapes me - Paul maybe?] but obviously he made a very negative impression on me). Actually, though, I think it was the combination of not really liking this guy at all (but hanging out with him for a lack of better things to do) and not being familiar with the movie to begin with. And I think I fell asleep through part of it. So here was this movie that I'd been waiting for weeks to see (in part because part two, Day Watch was released on on June 1st) and I'd already seen it.
Whoa, oddly enough...I just realized...Jake has Equilibrium sitting on his kitchen table right now. That's the other movie I watched with that guy. How weird is that?
Anyway, do I recommend the movie? Yeah, sure. It's interesting. If you're a vampire fan don't expect your typical vamp flick, though.
We also watched a werewolf movie called Ginger Snaps (aha! I just now "got" the title...I was focused on the cookie not the meaning of the words themselves - veeery clever) which was recommended by my friend Delly Bean. I liked it a lot - it was flinch-worthy and gory and fun at the same time. And my favorite character, Bridgette? The way she dressed was awesome. I couldn't get enough of the jackets and skirts she wore.
Next up - The Return of the Living Dead, - back to zombie movies, funny zombie movies.
I LOVE Nightwatch. I got to see it with subtitles, but I don't remember them being colourful. I saw it in one of the local art-house theatres.
And Ginger Snaps is also a play on the character's name, it just delights me so, and the boy who lives in the greenhouse is dreamy. And Bridgette is awesome. Don't bother with the second one (I hate to say it but there it is), but the prequel was filmed at my place of employment (though there were some shots taken in a studio and elsewhere).
